Dasburg, Andrew

Dasburg, Andrew (1887–1979). American painter, born in Paris. He studied in New York at the Art Students League and with Robert Henri, then in 1909–10 lived in Paris, where he discovered modern French painting. At the Armory Show in 1913 he was represented by two Cubist paintings and a sculpture (the only one he ever made). His work was also included in the Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters in 1916, but after this his style became less avant-garde, with Cézanne as a major influence. In 1930 he settled at Taos in New Mexico, where there was an artists' colony. Dasburg is now perhaps best remembered for the part he played in bringing the naive painter John Kane to public attention.
