Chelsea Art School

Chelsea Art School. A school of painting and drawing run by Augustus John and William Orpen in London, 1903–7. It was located at Nos. 4 and 5 Rossetti Studios, Flood Street, Chelsea. Orpen's brother-in-law Jack Knewstub was secretary and general manager (he also ran the Chenil Gallery, an art supplies shop and exhibition space), and various exSlade friends helped with lectures and demonstrations (Gwen Salmond, who later married Matthew Smith, was ‘Lady Superintendent'—men and women students were segregated). The school opened in autumn 1903 and by January 1904 it had 35 students. Both principals enjoyed teaching, but John's initial enthusiasm soon faded and Orpen was too busy elsewhere to carry it on his own, so the school died of neglect. It is not to be confused with Chelsea School of Art, which was founded in 1882 and is still in existence as Chelsea College of Art and Design. It is one of the colleges that make up the London Institute (see ST MARTIN'S SCHOOL OF ART).
