Cahiers d'art. Art journal published in Paris from 1926 to 1960. Several issues appeared every year, but the frequency varied; publication was suspended in 1941–3. It was produced by the Greek-born writer Christian Zervos (1889–1970) in collaboration with his wife Marion (1905–70). The journal covered a wide range of subjects, including poetry, music, film, architecture, and Mediterranean archaeology, but it concentrated on modern art, and in particular published many articles on Zervos's friend Picasso. In 1937, for example, a special number was devoted to his painting Guernica, with photographs showing it in various stages of progress. The colour illustrations in the journal were of high quality and sometimes consisted of original lithographs. Zervos also edited and published the standard catalogue of Picasso's works (33 volumes, 1932–78). For an example of the influence of Cahiers d'art see SMITH, DAVID.
