Buren, Daniel (1938– ). French painter and Conceptual artist. He was born in Boulogne-Billancourt and studied in Paris at the École Nationale Supérieure des Métiers d'Art, 1956–60. Since 1965 his work has invariably featured deckchair-like vertical stripes, alternating white with a single colour. These stripes, always 8.7 cms wide, have been used in various contexts—applied to billboards, for example, or in gallery installations. Often they are ephemeral, but in 1986 he created
Deux Plateaux (‘Two Levels'), an arrangement of striped marble columns of varied heights in the courtyard of the Palais Royale, Paris. According to Charles Harrison and Paul Wood (
Art in Theory 1900–1990, 1992), ‘His declared aim is to reduce painting to an essential state, by this means to effect a rupture with traditional concepts of development in art, and to reinstate painting as a practice of theory as distinct from decoration or craft'—an analysis that at least has the virtue of brevity compared with Buren's own tortuous explications.
