Brodzky, Horace

Brodzky, Horace (1885–1969). British painter, graphic artist, designer, writer, and editor. He was born in Australia and spent four years in the USA before moving to London in 1908. His early paintings were influenced by the Vorticists and he was particularly friendly with Gaudier-Brzeska, who made a plaster portrait bust of him in 1913 (casts are in the Tate Gallery, London, and elsewhere). Brodzky later wrote a biography of Gaudier-Brzeska (1933) and a book on his drawings (1946). From 1915 to 1923 he lived in New York, where he became a friend of Jules Pascin, on whom he wrote a monograph (1946). Brodzky's paintings were mainly figure compositions and portraits. He also made pen drawings of the nude (a collection of his drawings was published in book form in 1935) and he was one of the first serious artists to take an interest in linocut (1912). In 1948 he became art editor of the Antique Dealer and Collector's Guide.
