Boussingault, Jean-Louis

Boussingault, Jean-Louis (1883–1943). French painter, designer, and graphic artist, born in Paris into academic circles, his grandfather, Jean-Baptiste Boussingault, being an eminent chemist. His training included periods at the École des Arts Décoratifs and at the Académie Julian, where he met his lifelong friend Dunoyer de Segonzac (they shared a studio from 1906 to 1908). Among his early works were poster designs (he was a skilled lithographer) and illustrations for popular journals. Like Dunoyer de Segonzac he stood somewhat apart from the mainstream of art in Paris, cultivating a poetic and elegant style, with subtle and sumptuous colour (see NÉO-RÉALISME). His paintings included still-lifes, portraits, nudes, and scenes of fashionable life, and he illustrated a number of books. Late in his career he also did several large murals (for example at the Théâtre du Palais de Chaillot, Paris, 1937) and designed cartoons for tapestries.
