Beal, Jack (1931– ). American Superrealist painter, born in Richmond, Virginia, and active mainly in New York. Like Alfred Leslie, he is unusual among Superrealists in that he concentrates on narrative or allegorical subjects, rather than scenes from the banal everyday world. He believes that art should have a didactic message and in 1979 said: ‘I think that what we have to try to do … is to make beautiful paintings about life as we live it.’ His works are often ambitious in scale and composition, notably four panels on The History of Labour in America (1976–7) for the United States General Services Administration.
