Antes, Horst (1936– ). German painter, sculptor, and printmaker. He was born in Heppenheim and studied at the Academy in Karlsruhe, 1957–9. His early paintings were influenced by Abstract Expressionism, especially de Kooning, but from about 1960 his style became more firmly structured. He is best known for his ‘Gnome’ paintings, featuring clumsy, heavily stylized torsoless figures, their huge heads—characteristically seen in profile—attached to the top of their legs. With their almond-shaped staring eyes, the figures are reminiscent of Egyptian sculpture. He has taken part in many international exhibitions, and in 1966 was awarded the Unesco prize at the Venice Biennale.
