helot An inhabitant of ancient Greece forced into serfdom by conquering invaders. Helots were used as agricultural labourers and in domestic service. The Messenians, subjected by SPARTA, greatly outnumbered the Spartan citizens, and fear of their rebellion caused the city to keep them under ruthlessly tight military control.
