Wallace, Sir William

Wallace, Sir William (c.1270–1305) Scottish national hero. He was a leader of Scottish resistance to Edward I, defeating the English army at Stirling in 1297. In the same year he mounted military campaigns against the north of England and was appointed Guardian of the Realm of Scotland. After Edward's second invasion of Scotland in 1298, Wallace was defeated at the Battle of Falkirk; he was subsequently captured and executed by the English.
