Valmy, Battle of (1792) The first important engagement of the French Revolutionary wars. Near a small village on the road between Verdun and Paris the French commander-in-chief, Charles-François Dumouriez, with the belated assistance of Marshal François Christophe Kellermann, defeated the Duke of Brunswick's German troops. The French, whose morale was low after a series of defeats, were at first obliged to withdraw, but rallied the next day and forced Brunswick to retreat.
