Turner, Nat (1800–31) Black American leader of the Virginia slave revolt of 1831. Believing himself a divine instrument to guide his people out of bondage, Turner led about 60 slaves into revolt in Southampton County, Virginia, killing 57 White people before he, his followers, and a number of innocent slaves were killed. Turner's rebellion exacerbated Southern fears of insurrection and led to a tightening of police measures against slaves.
