Tocqueville, Alexis, Comte de (1805–59) French statesman and political analyst. Sent to the USA in 1831 to study its penal system, de Tocqueville carried out a systematic survey of US political and social institutions, publishing the results in De la démocratie en Amerique (1835 and 1840). The book immediately found a large readership and became one of the most influential political writings of the 19th century. It remains probably the greatest of all European commentaries on US politics and society.
