Tammany Hall Headquarters of a political organization in New York City. Founded in 1789, it was named after a late 17th-century Indian chief, and based its rites and ceremonies on pseudo-Indian forms. It acquired, under the control of Aaron BURR, a political importance that endured until the 1950s. The word Tammany became synonymous with machine politics, graft, corruption, and other abuses in city politics.
