Speke, John Hanning
Speke, John Hanning (1827–64) British explorer. From 1854 to 1858 he accompanied Sir Richard Burton on expeditions to trace the source of the Nile. They became the first Europeans to discover Lake Tanganyika (1858), after which Speke went on to reach a great lake which he identified as the ‘source reservoir’ of the Nile; he called it Lake Victoria in honour of the queen.
