Sheriffmuir, Battle of (13 November 1715) A battle fought in Scotland, the only major battle of the FIFTEEN Rebellion. The JACOBITE army of 10,000 men, commanded by the Earl of Mar, met the much smaller loyalist force of the Duke of Argyll. Although the fighting was inconclusive, Mar was forced on to the defensive, and the chance of Jacobite success disappeared.
