Prempeh I

Prempeh I (died 1931) African leader, Asantehene (Chief) of the ASANTE. He was elected in 1888, but deposed by the British in 1896. In 1924 he was allowed to return to Kumasi and in 1926 was installed as Kumasihene, a simple divisional chief. On his death in 1931 his nephew, Prempeh II, was elected Kumasihene, and then Asantehene in 1935, when the Golden Stool, symbolic of Asante power, was returned by the British and the traditional Asante Confederacy was restored.
