Plutarch
Plutarch (
c.46–126 AD) Greek writer and philosopher of wide-ranging interests. His extant works include rhetorical pieces, philosophical treatises, and, most memorably, his
Parallel Lives, paired biographies of famous Greeks and Romans. He was concerned to highlight the personal virtues (and sometimes vices) of his subjects, and the result has been an inspiration to later writers, most notably Shakespeare in his Roman plays.
