Philip VI
Philip VI (1293–1350) King of France (1328–50), the first of the
VALOIS kings. His right to the throne was challenged by
EDWARD III of England and the
HUNDRED YEARS WAR began in 1337. His ill-fated reign also witnessed the
BLACK DEATH and war with Flanders. Despite the ruinous expense of war and some disastrous military defeats, the government was strengthened during this period as an organized system of taxation evolved.
