Nightingale, Florence
Nightingale, Florence (1820–1910) British nurse and medical reformer. She became famous during the Crimean War for her attempts to publicize the state of the army's medical arrangements and improve the standard of care. In 1854 she took a party of nurses to the army hospital at Scutari, where she improved sanitation and medical procedures, thereby achieving a dramatic reduction in the mortality rate; she became known as ‘the Lady of the Lamp’ for her nightly rounds. She returned to England in 1856 and devoted the rest of her life to attempts to improve public health and hospital care.
