Mzilikazi (c.1796–1868) NDEBELE leader. The first great ruler of the Ndebele, he united his people into a nation under his leadership. He became a war leader under SHAKA, King of the Zulu, but rebelled in 1822. He led his people away from Zululand to what is now the western Transvaal, and then settled with his subjects in the area of Bulawayo. In 1837 he fled north, subduing the Shona, and ruling the Ndebele until his death.
