Montenegro
Montenegro (Serbo-Croat Crna Gora) A mountainous landlocked republic in the Balkans. Joined with Serbia before the Turkish conquest of 1355, Montenegro became independent in 1851. In 1918 it became part of the federation of Yugoslavia, of which it remained, with Serbia, a nominal constituent. When Yugoslavia disintegrated during 1991 it remained in alliance with Serbia, confirmed by a referendum in 1992. Serbia and Montenegro declared themselves to be an independent country, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, but this country has not been internationally recognized because of its involvement in the civil war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
