Medina Sidonia, Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, Duke of

A Dictionary of World History | 2000 | Copyright

Medina Sidonia, Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, Duke of (1550–1619) Spanish nobleman. He succeeded to his title in 1555. In 1588 PHILIP II charged him with responsibility for commanding the SPANISH ARMADA against England. He begged to be relieved of the commission, on grounds of ill health and inexperience, but without success. He organized his fleet with great efficiency, and was by no means exclusively to blame for the Armada's eventual failure. He subsequently served Philip III.
