Janata Party

A Dictionary of World History | 2000 | Copyright

Janata Party Indian political organization. A grouping of mostly right-wing Hindu political parties, it was based upon the Jana Sangh (People's Party, founded 1951). The so-called Janata Front was a broad coalition formed to oppose Indira GANDHI in 1975. The Janata Party proper was formed in 1977 as a coalition under Morarji Desai; it won the 1977 election and formed a government that endured until the end of 1979. In 1989 an anti-Congress National Front, Janata Dal, was formed by V. P. Singh, who was briefly Prime Minister (1990); but the party split over the issue of the Untouchables (the people with the lowest status in the caste system) and the Congress (I) Party returned to power.
