Jagiellon A Polish dynasty that reigned in Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, and Bohemia in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. The family gained prominence under Jagiełło, Grand Duke of Lithuania (c.1345–1434), who became King of Poland, as Ladislas I, in 1386. A descendant, Ladislas III, King of Poland (1434), governed Hungary as Lazlo I (1440) but was killed by the Turks at Varna in 1444. His brother, Casimir IV of Poland, fought the Teutonic Knights and gained the throne of Bohemia for his son, Ladislas II, and in 1490, as Lazlo II, of Hungary. His son was defeated and killed at the Battle of Mohács (1525). The line died out with Sigismund II Augustus, King of Poland (1548–72).
