Irgun (Hebrew, in full
Irgun Zvai Leumi, ‘National Military Organization’; byname ETZEL) An underground
ZIONIST terrorist group dedicated to the foundation of a Jewish state, active (1937–48) in Palestine against Arabs and later Britons. Under the leadership of Menachem
BEGIN from 1944, it blew up the King David Hotel in Jerusalem (22 July 1946), with the loss of 91 lives. It was disbanded when its objectives were achieved with the creation of Israel.
