EOKA (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters) The militant wing of the enosis (Greek, ‘union’) movement in Cyprus. Colonel Georgios Grivas (1898–1974), commander of the Greek Cypriot national guard, was its most famous leader. During 1954 to 1959 guerrilla warfare and terrorist attacks were waged against the British forces. In 1956 MAKARIOS was exiled on the charge of being implicated with EOKA. After independence in 1960 the organization was revived as EOKA-B. Renewed demands for enosis in 1970, achieved success in 1974. In response Turkey invaded and partitioned the island to protect the Turkish minority.
