Corday d'Armont, Charlotte
Corday d'Armont, Charlotte (1768–93) French noblewoman, the murderess of
MARAT. After a lonely childhood in Normandy she began to attend the meetings of the
GIRONDINS, where she heard of Marat as a tyrant and conceived the idea of assassinating him. She arrived in Paris in 1793 and on 13 July murdered Marat in his bath. A plea of insanity was overruled and she was sentenced to death on the guillotine.
