Constance, Council of
Constance, Council of (1414–18) An ecclesiastical council held at Constance, in Germany, which was called to deal with reform and heresy within the Christian Church. It resolved the
GREAT SCHISM, decreed the regular calling of councils, and presided over the trial and burning of John
HUSS. It failed, however, to produce effective reform of outstanding abuses in clerical finance and conduct, or to curb papal independence.
