Ausgleich (1867; German, ‘compromise’) A constitutional compromise between Hungary and the AUSTRIAN EMPIRE following the defeat of Austria in Italy and Germany. It was drawn up by Francis Deák, and ratified by the Austrian emperor FRANCIS JOSEPH, granting Hungary its own parliament and constitution but retaining Francis Joseph as King of Hungary. A dual monarchy, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY, was created, in which the Magyars were permitted to dominate their subject peoples and the Austrians the remaining seventeen provinces of the empire.
