Amherst, Jeffrey, Baron
Amherst, Jeffrey, Baron (1717–97) British general. He commanded the combined operation which captured Louisburg in 1758. On his appointment as commander-in-chief in America, he applied widespread pressure on the French. His own army advanced northward up the Hudson Valley, taking Ticonderoga and Crown Point in 1759 and Montreal in 1760, thus ending French control of Canada. He was then made governor of Virginia, but failed to contain
PONTIAC's Native American Rebellion in 1763 and was recalled. He refused to fight against Americans in 1775, but advised on strategy.
