Afghani, Jamal al-Din al-

Afghani, Jamal al-Din al- (1839–97) Muslim revivalist of Iranian origin. He advocated social and political reforms within Muslim countries and Pan-Islamism. Afghani was active as a teacher in Egypt during the 1870s, edited a newspaper (al-Urwa al-Wuthqa, ‘the Unbreakable Link’) in Paris during the 1880s, and played a part in the protest in Iran in 1891–92.
