Adrianople, Battle of

Adrianople, Battle of (9 August 378 AD) The Roman city of Adrianople, 480 km (300 miles) west of Constantinople, was the scene of the defeat of the Roman forces by the VISIGOTHS. Emperor Valens, who had hoped to prevent the Gothic invasion of the Roman empire, was killed.
