Acheson, Dean (Gooderham) (1893–1971) US politician. He served as Assistant Secretary of State, Under-Secretary, and Secretary of State 1949–53, urging international control of nuclear power in the Acheson-Lilienthal Report of 1946, formulating plans for NATO (
NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION), implementing the
MARSHALL PLAN, and the
TRUMAN Doctrine of US support for nations threatened by communism.
