syndicalism A labour movement originating in France and influenced by
anarchism which believed in the inevitability of class warfare and in direct action by the workers themselves. Thus, rather than socialist parties, the central agents for the workers were held to be the
syndicats, the trade unions, whose ultimate weapon was the general strike. Syndicalism was very influential in France in the first decades of this century, as well as in Spain (until the end of the Republic) and Italy, where many of its adherents became attracted by
Fascism.
