dopolavoro (‘after work’) One of the more popular institutions of Fascist Italy, whose official title was Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro. It was a national recreational network of clubs, bars, sports facilities, libraries, and holiday centres. It included almost three million members by 1936, though after the outbreak of World War II it became a less prominent factor in the Italian state.
