domino theory The name given in 1954 to the opinion of President
Eisenhower that the states of south-east Asia were like a row of dominoes which might all fall to
Communism if Communists managed to ‘knock one down’. It was translated into an article of faith during the
Democratic Kennedy and
Johnson administrations. Their strategists were haunted by the political costs incurred by the Democratic administration when China fell to Communism in 1949. Belief in the domino theory had crucial implications for the
Vietnam War. It gave successive administrations reason to increase military involvement in south-east Asia, and provided decision-makers and journalists with an apparent rationale to justify such efforts.
