Yrigoyen, Hipólito

Yrigoyen, Hipólito (b. 13 July 1850, d. 3 July 1933). Argentine President 1916–22, 1928–30 Under his leadership the Radical Party emerged as the principal representative of the Argentinian middle classes from 1893, and he presided over the party's heyday (1916–30). As President he violently repressed riots in 1918–19 caused by the recession and inflation that hit Argentina as part of a worldwide recession. The 1920s were marked by relative calm. From 1929 onwards Argentina was affected by the Great Depression, though it did not suffer as much as other economies. He was ousted by a military coup of officers deeply suspicious of democracy.
