World Health Organization (WHO) A specialized agency of the
UN, founded on 7 April 1948, with its headquarters in Geneva. In its mission to promote general worldwide health, it created health services in less-developed countries, organized campaigns against epidemic diseases (e.g. smallpox,
AIDS, tuberculosis), implemented international quarantine and sanitation rules, funded research programmes and the collection and collation of statistics, and sponsored the training of medical specialists. By 1998, it had 193 member states.
