War Measures Act (Canada) A statute of 1914 which allowed the federal government to govern by decree whenever it was faced with ‘war, invasion or insurrection, real or apprehended’, thus severely curtailing civil liberties. It was enforced during both World Wars, and to a limited degree during the Korean War. More controversially, it was invoked by Trudeau in 1970, in response to kidnappings by the Front de Libération du Québec.
