Vatican Council, Second (1962–5) A conference of all Roman Catholic bishops worldwide called to conclude the disciplinary reforms discussed at the First Vatican Council (1869–70), and to bring the Church up to date in all matters of teaching and organization, with the ultimate goal of Christian unity. It was convened by Pope
John XXIII and met in four sessions, three of them held under his successor,
Paul VI. Together, it issued sixteen conciliar statements: two on the church, two on priests, and one each on the liturgy, divine revelation, religious life, the laity, the episcopate, missionary work, education, ecumenism, non-Christians, the Eastern Churches, religious freedom, and social communication. Most importantly, they established the
ecumenical dialogue with other Christian denominations, reduced the overbearing weight of the papacy within the Church, and re-emphasized the Church's commitment to peace and social justice.
