Truman Doctrine (USA) One of the key US policies during the
Cold War. In February 1947, the British government announced that it could no longer afford to support Greece and Turkey against Communist insurgents. Believing in the policy of
containment of what was perceived to be an expansive and
totalitarian Communist Bloc, President
Truman called for the USA to step into the breach and reverse its traditional policy of non-involvement in European affairs. On 14 March 1947 Truman specifically called for aid to Greece and Turkey. He pledged that the USA would ‘support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures’. $400 million in military and economic aid were sent and used, primarily in defence against the Communist rebels which in Greece were largely supported not by
Stalin, but by
Tito.
