Triple Alliance A defensive military alliance between Germany, Italy, and Austria, initially concluded in 1882 by Bismarck to offset a possible alliance between France and Russia. It was renewed for the last time in 1912, and led to the fateful German assurance in the summer of 1914 that it would support Austria in the event of a military conflict with Serbia, following the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand in
Sarajevo. To intense German irritation, Italy remained neutral in the first nine months of the war and eventually turned against its former partners to fight on the
Allied side in 1915, following the Treaty of
London.
