Teschen Dispute A small area surrounding the city of Teschen, ruled by the Austrian Habsburgs from the eighteenth century until World War I. It became highly industrialized in the later nineteenth century. Conflicting claims by Czechoslovakia and Poland led to violent clashes in 1919, which were arbitrated by the League of Nations in 1920. Accordingly, the area was divided so that the northern half, which included the city, went to Poland, while the southern half, with its rich coalfields, went to Czechoslovakia. The issue soured the relations between the two countries for twenty years. However, in 1938, Poland became an often-overlooked beneficiary of the Munich Agreement, which allowed Germany to invade the Sudetenland, while the Poles were granted the annexation of the Czech part of Teschen. In 1945 the Soviet Union decreed that the 1920–38 compromise be restored.
