Tambo, Oliver Reginald (b. 27 Oct. 1917, d. 24 Apr. 1993). President-general of the ANC 1977–90 Born in Bizana (Cape Province), he became a close friend of
Mandela while studying at Fort Hare University. Together they were founding members of the
ANC Youth League in 1944. They opened the first Black law practice in the country (1952), and he became secretary-general of the ANC (1954–8). He left for Lusaka (Zambia) just before the ANC's ban in 1960, and set up its headquarters there. He was acting president-general for the imprisoned Mandela (1967–77) before becoming president-general himself. He suffered a severe stroke in 1989, but was able to return to South Africa in 1991.
