Stern Gang Founded as the Lohamei Herut Yisrael (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel), it derived its popular name from its first leader, Stern (b. 1907, d. 1942). Dedicated to the expulsion of the British and the creation of a state of Israel, it broke away from Irgun in protest against the latter's cease-fire against the British during World War II. After Stern was killed by the British in 1942, its leadership included Shamir, among others. It operated in small groups, attacking British service personnel and organizing the assassination of government officials, as well as destroying installations. Its victims included Lord Moyne, the British Minister for the Middle East in Cairo (1944), and probably Count Bernadotte, the UN mediator in Palestine (1948). It was suppressed after 1949, although some members joined the Israeli defence forces.
