Stasi (Staatssicherheitsdienst, State Security Service) The East German security service in operation since 1945/6 (though officially not founded until 1950). Its activities, whose vast extent was only revealed after its dissolution in 1990, contributed significantly to the survival of the Communist regime. In a country of seventeen million inhabitants, it had 91,000 full-time agents and up to 175,000 secret collaborators. In the surviving Stasi archives are files on six million people. Despite its effectiveness in internal surveillance and international spy operations, it was unable to prevent the revolution against the GDR's Communist system in 1989. To the contrary, by utilizing vast amounts of manpower and economic resources, the Stasi apparatus helped accelerate the GDR's economic collapse.
