Soccer War (July 1969) A brief war between El Salvador and Honduras, which derived its name from the qualifying match between the two countries for the football World Cup, when tensions between the two countries came to a head. It was provoked by the migration from overpopulated El Salvador into Honduras of altogether half a million people, in the years since 1930, as well as El Salvador's commercial superiority over its neighbour, which was accentuated by the establishment of the
Central American Common Market (
CACM). The war was soon stopped owing to international pressure, though its consequences were especially severe for El Salvador, whose underperforming economy was unable to reassimilate the over 100,000 migrants returning from Honduras.
