Sino-Soviet frontier dispute (1969) The exact position of the border between north-east China and the Soviet Union had long been a matter of dispute. The disagreement turned into a military confrontation because of worsening ideological differences between the two countries after 1960, and the militant nationalism which was part of the Cultural Revolution. In March 1969 two battles were fought for possession of the small island of Zhen Bao (Damansky) in the Ussuri River. The Chinese ultimately retained control, and talks in September 1969 brought the crisis to an end. In 1977 there was a limited agreement on rules of navigation on the river, but tension continued along the frontier until 1989.
