Seyss-Inquart, Arthur (b. 22 July 1892, d. 16 Oct. 1946). Austrian Nazi leader Born into the German minority in Stannern (Moravia), he qualified and pratised as a lawyer in Vienna. As an active member of various
Fascist movements he stood in close contact with the Austrian Nazi Party (National Socialists) from 1931, and joined the party in 1938. During the 1930s, he co-ordinated the activities of the Austrian
Fascists with the German
Nazi Party. In February 1938 he was imposed on
Schuschnigg as Minister of the Interior. He became Chancellor after Schuschnigg's forced resignation on 11 March 1938, only to invite openly the already advancing German army into the country. He was made governor of Austria by Hitler, and in 1939 governor-general of Poland. As commissioner in the Netherlands (1940–5), he was responsible for the brutal Nazi regime there during the occupation, which led to thousands of summary executions, and the deportation to
concentration camps of hundreds of thousands of Jews and opponents of the regime. He was sentenced to death at the
Nuremberg Trials.
